Moving to Portugal: a checklist for the first weeks
The first weeks go more smoothly with a short list. These are the practical things most people sort out, roughly in this order.
Before you arrive
- Check what your nationality requires. Citizens of EU and EEA countries have different rules from citizens of other countries, who may need a visa or a residence permit.
- Gather your documents. Passport, birth and marriage certificates, and any other papers you may need. Some documents have to be translated or legalised.
When you arrive
- Tax number (NIF). You need it for almost everything: renting, a bank account, utilities and a phone contract.
- A home. Rental contracts normally ask for a deposit and one or more months in advance. Read the contract carefully before signing.
- A bank account. You usually need your NIF, passport and proof of address.
- Social Security number (NISS). Needed if you will work.
- Health care. Register at your local health centre (centro de saúde) to get access to the national health service.
- Residence. EU and EEA citizens register their residence at the local council (câmara municipal). Citizens of other countries apply for a residence permit through the immigration authority (AIMA).
